I admit. Thrift stores are a bit of an obsession with me. Since my childhood, I have have enjoyed sifting through gently used goods at garage sales and thrift stores to find the ideal bargain item. I’m always in search of that unique, got to have item that you can’t buy in a box store or via search online.
I’m a firm believer in “One man’s clutter is another man’s treasure” or in the recycle, reuse and reclaim mentality. I would rather spend less for something more unique than invest in something mass-produced. I want something with character, charm and a bit of use to add to my collection.
Turns out, the Sunshine Coast is an awesome place for thrifting and locating vintage finds!
In upper Gibsons, at the intersection of North/School Road and Gibsons Way, there are two thrift stores within walking distance of one another: Salvation Army Thrift Store in Kern’s Plaze and Community Treasures at 731 North Road (next to Rug Runnerz and Benjamin Moore).
The Sunshine Coast also specializes in community shops where there is one store front but several “shops” or booths within. It’s like an antique mall that specializes in local wares, artisan crafts and vintage finds. A few of these unique stores include the Mosaic Market in Davis Bay, Molly’s Lane Market in lower Gibsons & Gibsons Landing Trading Post on Gower Point Road.
Thrift stores and community markets are the ideal way of introducing unique items into your lifestyle and a fun way to spend your weekend getaway on the Sunshine Coast. So, next time you are running errands or headed to brunch, take a moment to stop one of these unique stores, you never know what you will find.
